Functional Planning
Functional planning in VPM is executed inside the collaborative planning event, not as a separate planning bureaucracy. Each lane owner brings functional depth, then aligns dependencies, timing, and handoffs with other lanes until one integrated schedule is credible.
The practical mechanics are already covered in depth elsewhere. This page is a quick map to those sections.
Where the Detailed Method Lives
- Project Planning Event: event structure, lane alignment, dependency reconciliation, and compression flow.
- Planning Event Preparation: readiness criteria and baseline multi-day agenda.
- Functional Planning Prework: what lane owners should prepare before the event.
- Swimlane Diagram: visual architecture for functional flow and handoffs.
- RACI Task Breakdown: accountable ownership structure at the handoff level.
Functional Planning Output
At the end of functional planning, each lane has explicit owned tasks, clear predecessor-successor links, and phase-level execution detail aligned to one integrated project schedule.
